Formula E Team NIO enjoyed a productive outing in Morocco on Sunday 13th January, where British duo Jamie Chadwick and Jake Hughes assumed driving duties for the squad in the official Marrakesh Rookie test event.
Following on from race two of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship season at the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan yesterday, the teams remained at the venue for the test which took place on a very clean track surface, offering excellent conditions.
Providing NIO with an opportunity to fully work through the data gathered from the Marrakesh e-Prix, as well as pushing forward with continued development of the NIO Gen-2 cars, Chadwick and Hughes each completed a very strong day of running.
For Chadwick, of course, the test marked her second appearance with NIO in a testing capacity while Formula E debutant Hughes, a multiple race winner in Asian F3 and Vice-Champion of the category last year, made his maiden outing with the team.
Jake Hughes, Test Driver, NIO Formula E Team:
“I really enjoyed being with NIO in Marrakesh. It is my first time in the Gen2 car and it felt great. I had a day working in the sim on Thursday to prepare, and that was really beneficial as I have not driven this circuit before. Hopefully I have helped the team with gathering valuable data and information. Formula E is a big goal of mine, so I’d like to thank Gerry Hughes and NIO for the opportunity they’ve given me.”
Jamie Chadwick, Test Driver, NIO Formula E Team:
“It has been a productive day for both myself and the team. It is always great to get mileage under my belt with the Season 5 car. Despite not getting any full power runs today I feel that we maximised the time we had and gathered some useful data. As always thank you to Gerry and the team for the opportunity.”
Gérry Hughes, Team Principal, NIO Formula E Team:
“Off the back of yesterday’s race, we have worked solely on optimising our long run performance today and whilst our two young charges were keen to conduct 250 kW qualifying simulations this afternoon, we have had to focus on our priorities heading into the next race weekend.
So, having conducted multiple race simulations with both Jamie and Jake this afternoon, we have amassed a significant amount of data which we must now go away with, analyse and come back stronger for the Chilean e-Prix.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to both of our young drivers today, they have both integrated themselves very well in to the NIO Formula E Team and whilst they have had a lot of information to digest and process over the course of the day, they have certainly equipped themselves in a very professional manner.”
Race three of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship season takes NIO to South America for the Antofagasta Minerals Santiago e-Prix in Chile on Saturday, 26th January.
